The good ol' hockey game

Two of my favorite things about Josiah are that he has a great imagination and he loves sports. (Just two of many things I love about him...) These two attributes combined lead to what we call his "constant commentary." From the time he wakes up in the morning until he goes to bed at night (and likely while he sleeps) Josiah has imaginary sporting events going on his head, and he commentates them off and on throughout the day. (Mostly on...) I've learned to tune him out, but since he does require affirmation that we've heard every score and player and penalty and team he's just updated us on, I've gotten in the habit of saying, "Oh yeah, really?" pretty much all day. The sport rotates between hockey, football, and soccer for the most part, but the idea is always the same. He tells us which player he is and what team he's on and what team they're playing and what the score is and who got what penalties and he insists that we tell him who we're cheering for. This does not necessarily have to be the team he's playing for, but we have to remain consistent at all times. For example, yesterday he presented me with probably the 38th scenario of the day and asked me if I was cheering for the Oilers. I distractedly said yes, and he reminded me, "Mom, you never cheer for the Oilers." I tried to think of a situation when I would, but he was right, so I had to admit I had been distracted, and of course I wasn't cheering for the Oilers. =)

Anyway, yesterday was such a fine display of his full-blown imaginary gaming, that I thought I would share the play-by-play with all of you.

As you may have noticed from an earlier post, Josiah just got new roller blades, so he was outside playing hockey while Abby and I watched from the driveway/front steps/flower beds...wherever Abby led me. This was how we watched the events unfold...

Standing proudly for the singing of "Oh Canada." (But not actually singing because he had noticed the night before at the beginning of the Canucks game that most of the players didn't sing...)

The main action of the game. Full of muttered play-by-play, "Sedin passes to Sedin. Down the ice to Naslund. Into the attacking zone goes Trevor Linden......"

The cheer. (Though at this point, he scored with an imaginary puck- he alternates in and out using real or imaginary pucks.)

Line change. That's right. I wasn't sure why he kept going to all the effort to get to the stairs for a few minutes- there's a bit of an incline there, which isn't easy to maneuver when you're new on roller blades. I asked him about this and he just said to me, "Line change, mom." "Of course", I said, trying to hide my smile.

Skating out on the ice as he's announced the first star of the game. He did this very humbly as if he's always the first star- which he is. =)

In the dressing room, where he goes after every period and at the end of the game after being announced first star. I asked him what he was doing in the garage. "Are you done playing hockey?" I asked. No mom, we're just talking to the coach. Then I hear him muttering quietly, "Yeah coach, I know. I had a good game......" Again, humbly accepting this praise. =)

What a kid! He's awesome.

I love it! I can completely relate to your post! My son Aiden (age 5, coincidently has Josiah for a middle name) also has a running commentary throughout the day but instead of sports it is race cars and superheroes. I also say "that's great honey" an awful lot throughout the day in an effort to sound like I am paying close attention! Kid's have fabulous imaginations don't they?

This gave me the best smile today! A few of my co-workers are diehard hockey fans so I had to share this with them. Josiah is now everyone's favorite playoff star!! A well deserved honor I might add!

That is so hilarious!! What a great boy. Ian's more interested in racing and cars than hockey right now. Even attending a couple live games hasn't sparked that much interest, he enjoyed the popcorn more. :)

Josiah is definitely ALL BOY! I laughed so much at this post! I loved it! Emma is all girl. I get "And then Sabrina the barbie put on this dress -isn't it beautiful Mommy?. . .She is going to get married. . . this Daddy is marrying two Mommies because there is only one Daddy. . . the baby is crying because she fell of the swing. Did you see her fall Mommy?. . ." (You get the picture!) Thanks for your post. :)

Oh my gosh Jen! I Love that story so much! Your child is going to be a sports hero one day (though it kind of sounds like he already is...) : )

wouldn't have believed it if not for the pictures. crazy! what a guy. when i (jon) was a bit older than him i had an imaginary league on the twirly hockey table complete with season statistics. i'm sure when he discovers and understands the stats page he'll be on his way.

oh man that is gold.

Josiah has discovered table hockey at Nana and Papa's. We only have 4 teams but he is constantly switching teams in and out. Sometimes he mixes the teams up a bit and says that it is an all-star game.

Jen!! Oh my goodness, that is wonderful!!

I used to do that too, not with hockey of course, but I was constantly outside making stuff up. My mom would watch from the kitchen window and wonder what on earth I was doing out there talking to myself.

Imagination, especially in an age of screens (tv, computers, gaming consoles) is GOLD.

I love it! You know, you can tell your friends about this stuff, but actually having the photos to give the play-by-play is precious. Imagination is such a great thing. Sonya's always playing with so many different imaginary friends and assigns me and Hazel names of her friends. I'm always having to remember who I am. By the way, where's JOsiah's helmet??

Yes, good observation Melody! He usually does have his helmet on, so I'm not sure why he wasn't wearing it in this case!

Too funny! My girlfriend (who is a friend of your friend Cynthia) emailed this link because she was lurking away and found your post about Josiah. I have a nearly 6 year old Samuel who is EXACTLY the same way. Has been a hockey fan since 6 months old when I snapped a picture of him laughing and clapping his hands while sitting in his bouncy seat watching a hockey game. He totally does the same thing, including the commentating, singing "O Canada", pretending absolutely everything is a sport of some sort. I thought I was the only one out there that was privileged to enjoy such imagination. I keep saying I don't want to be a hockey mom but Sam could definitely be a commentator if he wants!

Jen, Josiah's too cute! One day when he's playing for the NHL, you could pull this up and show him where it all began.
