faraway friends

This morning I had a much needed conversation with the greatest friend a girl could have. The only problem is she lives 3 provinces away... I miss her...and many of my other good friends who I've left spread across the country. The great thing about having lived in 4 different provinces is that you meet all these great people who you wouldn't have if you'd stayed put, but the sad thing is, you have to leave them.

My friend Jon once taught a class on relationships for some student leaders at college, which I was sitting in on. I remember one part of his talk, which I think came from another author, but could have easily come from Jon because he's brilliant. He was explaining that some of our friendships can be categorized as "friends for the road," and others as "friends of the heart." Friends for the road are people who we grow very close to for a time, but then, as our paths diverge, we slowly grow apart. Friends of the heart never drift away despite the possible distances or passage of time. The author clarifies that both types of friend are important, and that just because a friendship fades with time, doesn't mean it wasn't very real and valuable at the time while two people walked the same road together. But friends of the heart, of course, are an amazing gift to be cherished.

I have had a lot of friends for the road, simply because I've been in several different places and one person realistically cannot maintain sincere, quality relationships with too many people in too many places. So there are times, lots of times, when I think about a particular friend, or group of friends and a particular time or place and I miss them. And I love them.

I have a few friends of the heart. Friendships that have stood the test of time and continue to be the relationships I depend on. And even though most of these friends live far away from me, I do, indeed cherish them.

Today I'm thankful for all my friends who I can't see face-to-face these days, but who have made and continue to make my life richer.

WOW! I LOVE THIS POST!!! Especially since I know it was me because you told me. =) (Sorry to everyone else if you thought it was you. . .)=) Anyway, I know what you mean. Some friends just never leave your spirit even when they are so physically far away. I am so glad God made it that way, and I feel the exact same way about you.
